Dr. Victor Frankenstein freezes to death and it's up to his creature, Adam (Aaron Eckhart) to bury him until he's attacked and rescued by gargoyles. Turns out there's a war between the Gargoyles that are angels and demons. I'm starting to have memories of the 1994 Disney cartoon now. The queen of the Gargoyles, Leonore (Miranda Otto holding her dignity) believes that this "man" must be named Adam. I wish I could tell you why, but we aren't explained it. Now, the story, writing and even directing by Stuart Beattie (Collateral) sounds it had potential.
Unfortunately, they open their mouths and their idea of acting is either sneering or staring bug eyed in the camera and our anti-hero wants to sound like The Dark Knight. Hey, Eckhart did star in the film! Must have been motivation. Physically, Eckhart was built like an MMA fighter, but since when does Franken...oops I mean Adam move around like Jason Bourne. Of course, Jai Courtney plays Gideon or as I thought Keanu Reeves' non talented but wooden stepbrother. I was waiting for someone to put his character out of his misery. Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, Dexter) is given nothing to do and given the Tara Reid treatment. Playing Terra, a scientist who has discovered a way to create life while an evil man named Naberius (Bill Nighy in full paycheck mode) wants to create his own super soldier army. Yeah, you read that right.
I don't how this film cost 65 million. Was it just for the locales? Because the CGI made Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenance look like Spider Man (2002). Splashed across the screen like a 4 yr old coloring out of the lines in a coloring book, at times making me wonder how this could possibly have been greenlighted. Especially with all the talent involved. It's by the writer of one of the best films you'll ever see and has a great cast but while Eckhart is busting his ass to make this work. In the end, it just doesn't. I hope that dashes dreams of I, Dracula or I, Wolfman in the future.
Verdict: D
I, Frankenstein has a lot of creativity to go around but the stiff performances, CGI meant for a cheap kids film, and lack of excitement makes this one of the worst of the year. Do yourself a favor and stick to the classics.
